In 2005 –  a group of us started holding fun rides at Lake Elberta Park in Tallahassee

We had a lot of fun….

The City-owned building beside the park was a mess…

So we painted it – over a period of 10 years – 8 times…

The lake itself was a mess too.  So we held cleanups – many many cleanups…

We spoke with politicians about the problem – Kristen Dozier came out once…

We spoke with City staff about the problem – Susan Tanski was very helpful…

Also Chuck Goodheart from Parks and Rec was very helpful…

Nancy Miller came by a couple of times and listened…

An intern drew a rending of a building to replace the abandoned restaurant…

We thought maybe a Tallahassee Outdoor Welcome Center might be good…

But mostly we just kept cleaning up and using the park for riding/safety classes…

My mother Norma Benton showed up sometimes to help…

The Apalachee Audubon Society started holding a bird-watching event!!!

In ten years we hosted a total of over 200 cleanups…

This is a photo of our most popular cleanup – 91 people came that day!

A lot has happened at Lake Elberta since 2005…  Bicycle House was founded and that has taken the majority of our energy.  To this day it bothers us though – the lot where the Chicken place used to stand is still abandoned.  It really could help the park – and the neighborhood – if the city did something creative there.   Thanks to everyone who came out to help over the years!  Thanks also, for all the ideas!!!
